Lazy Man’s Yoga and Herbs

Thai Massage is a unique form of bodywork sometimes called the “lazy man’s yoga”. It promotes relaxation, increases flexibility and restores energy through gentle, rhythmic acupressure that is applied to energy meridians along with a series of facilitated yoga postures. But, you don’t have to be lazy to enjoy Thai massage!

Massage is an integral part of Traditional Thai Medicine – a holistic practice that has been used for centuries. It is based on Ayurvedic Medicine and Yoga; using acupressure, energy meridians, and yoga-like stretching to balance energy.

This type of bodywork compliments physical activity and is appropriate for people of all ages and abilities. The classic Thai massage routine can be varied to treat a wide range of physical needs. Whether you have joint stiffness due to arthritis or muscle soreness from physical overuse; Thai massage can provide healing benefits and an energy-balancing experience.

What to expect:
Thai Massage is done fully clothed on a floor futon so you will need to wear loose clothing for the session. Starting at the feet, rhythmic compressions are given with hands, elbows, knees, or feet along energy lines to promote healing. The recipient is stretched and placed into yoga postures by the therapist, thus; “lazy – yoga”. The stretching and yoga opens joints and increases range of motion – a little further than one can go on their own. The slow, flowing pace of the bodywork satisfies the body’s need for movement and stretching while it soothes you into a peaceful meditative state. After the massage, most people feel calm, alert, and energized; similar to what one would experience after a Yoga or Tai Chi session.

Adding Herbs to Your Massage – Since Traditional Thai Medicine is a holistic approach to healing, there is a significant overlap between herbalism and massage. Massage clinics in Thailand use various healing herbs through sauna or steam bath either before, during or after the massage session. Heated herbal compresses are used during the massage session. The warm bundles are applied directly to the skin or through the client’s clothing during a massage session providing the physical and emotional benefits of the herbs.

These warm compresses are excellent for stiff, sore or pulled muscles, back pain, arthritis, chronic pain or injury, disorder of the internal organs, skin diseases, migraines, and chronic stress and anxiety. The blend of traditional Thai herbs used in these compresses can have a relaxing, yet invigorating effect on the body; a balancing effect on the mind and spirit, and a boost to the energy level.

  2. would Thai massage be good for someone who has never done Yoga. I have thought about getting into yoga but haven’t yet so I am not sure how far someone can get me to be put into yoga type positions for that extra stretch — or should i do yoga for a bit and get my body ready for a thai massage?

    • Thai massage is appropriate for all physical abilities. It seems you might fit the “lazy man’s” profile since you have been thinking of trying yoga but haven’ yet done so. You might like the facilitated stretching given through this type of massage.
